Niugini Black Bass Research

Niugini black bass (also known as Papua New Guinea black bass, Papuan black bass or Papuan black snapper) grows to over 30 kilograms and are rated as one of the toughest sports fish in freshwater and estuarine environments.

The aim of this project is to empower the Papua New Guinea National Fisheries Authority (NFA), the PNG Tourism Promotion Authority, and business and community groups to sustainably develop, grow and manage the expanding sport fishing industry in Papua New Guinea. The scientific focus is on developing a rigorous understanding of key social, economic and environmental issues that support a sustainable sport fishing industry.  The project was launched in Port Moresby in May 2014. It is funded by the NFA and the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR).
